Learn to speak English

How to actually learn to speak English

If you studied English for years and still freeze when you have to speak, it is not your fault. You learned to read, translate and fill in blanks — but nobody let you talk, because a patient English speaker was never available whenever you needed one. Speaking is a separate skill, and you build it the way you build any skill: by doing it, badly, until it is not bad. Here is the method that actually works, and how to start today for free.

1. Speak every day, even badly

Fluency is a muscle, not a fact you memorize. Ten minutes of real talking every day beats an hour of silent studying once a week. The goal at first is not to be correct — it is to stop freezing. Give yourself permission to make mistakes out loud; that is exactly where the learning happens.

2. Get corrected in real time, in your own language

A mistake you never notice is a mistake you keep making. The fastest progress comes when someone corrects you the moment you slip and explains why — in a language you fully understand. Being told 'yesterday I went, not I go' in Hebrew, Arabic or Russian sticks far better than a red X you cannot decode.

3. Practice the words YOU actually need

Generic courses teach everyone the same fixed list. But you remember words you use in a sentence you care about. Practice the vocabulary from your own life, work or studies — and turn every word you got wrong into a review card, so it comes back a few days later, right before you would have forgotten it (this is called spaced repetition, and it is the most efficient way to remember anything).

4. Feed your brain input at your level

You cannot speak words you have never met. Read and listen to English slightly above your current level — graded news, short articles, simple stories — so you constantly meet new words in context. Then talk about what you read. Reading gives you the material; speaking turns it into fluency.

5. Make it a habit you can keep

The learners who succeed are not the most talented — they are the ones who showed up daily for months. Attach practice to something you already do (your morning coffee, your commute), keep the sessions short enough that you never dread them, and track a streak so momentum works for you. Consistency beats intensity every time.

Why can't I speak English even though I studied it for years?

Because school and most apps train reading, grammar and translation — not speaking. Speaking is a separate skill that only develops through live practice with feedback. Without a patient English speaker available on demand, most learners never get enough reps, so they freeze the moment they have to talk.

How long does it take to become conversational in English?

With ten focused minutes of real conversation practice a day, most learners feel noticeably less 'frozen' within a few weeks and reach comfortable everyday conversation within a few months. The single biggest factor is daily consistency, not talent or hours crammed at once.

Can I practice speaking English for free?

Yes. SpeakBase gives every member free AI speaking minutes each month with Kate, a live conversation tutor that corrects you in real time and explains in your own language (Hebrew, Arabic, Russian or English).
