Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a soft, wearable patch that can help people reach REM sleep, a deep and important stage of sleep, faster and stay in it longer.
The device, called NEUSLeeP, combines gentle ultrasound waves with electrodes that track brain activity in real time, all without any medication or surgery.
In a study of 28 participants, the patch shortened the time it took to reach REM sleep by 43 minutes on average, and extended the time spent in REM sleep by about 16 minutes.
The lead researcher, Kai Wing Tang, a recent biomedical engineering graduate, said the results were published in the journal Nature Communications and mark new progress in sleep technology.
