Level 2 — Elementary
Researchers from MIT and the University of Colorado Boulder have created a new tool that connects the design of a spacecraft to how astronauts feel emotionally during long missions.
The tool, called the Human Environment Connection and Interaction Atlas, or HECIA, is supported by NASA. It links features of a spacecraft, such as lighting, privacy, and the layout of rooms, to feelings like stress, fatigue, and homesickness.
The research team looked closely at 14 different emotions and experiences that astronauts might feel, including anxiety, curiosity, nostalgia, and a sense of connection with the crew, known as kinship.
Two design details stood out. First, spacecraft do not have a normal day and night cycle like Earth, which can disturb an astronaut's sleep, so special lighting that changes throughout the day may help. Second, having a private space to be alone can lower stress and give astronauts a greater sense of control over their environment.

The platform, called the Human Environment Connection and Interaction Atlas, or HECIA, is supported by NASA and maps connections between specific habitat features, including lighting, privacy, shared spaces, and reconfigurability, and psychological outcomes such as stress, fatigue, anxiety, homesickness, sleep quality, and crew cohesion.
In building the atlas, the researchers examined fourteen distinct emotions and experiences that astronauts may encounter in confinement, ranging from anxiety and fatigue to more subtle states like nostalgia, curiosity, and autonomy, the sense of having control over one's own environment and choices.
Two design considerations emerged as particularly important. Because spacecraft lack the natural day night cycle that regulates circadian rhythms on Earth, engineers are exploring specialized lighting systems, already tested aboard the International Space Station, that gradually shift in spectrum to mimic natural light and support healthier sleep. Separately, the researchers found that giving astronauts a place to withdraw from the rest of the crew, even briefly, meaningfully reduces stress by restoring a sense of personal control.

Equally consequential, the atlas found that provisioning even modest personal withdrawal space measurably attenuates stress, an effect the researchers attribute to the restoration of perceived autonomy, underscoring that psychological resilience on deep space missions may hinge as much on architectural nuance as on life support engineering.
