Level 1 — Absolute Beginner
Nvidia makes computer chips used for artificial intelligence, or AI. OpenAI makes AI programs like ChatGPT.
Nvidia may give OpenAI a lot of money help, about 250 billion dollars. This would let OpenAI use a huge new building full of computers in Ohio.
The company SoftBank is building this huge building. It sits on land that used to make nuclear fuel.
Some people worry about this plan. OpenAI does not make a profit yet, so Nvidia's help is very important for the deal to work.
- chips
- small computer parts that do the thinking inside machines
- artificial intelligence
- computer systems that can learn and make decisions like humans
- guarantee
- a promise to make sure something happens or is paid for
- billion
- a thousand million, written as 1,000,000,000
- data center
- a large building full of computers that store and process information
- building
- a structure, like a factory or office, made for people or machines
- nuclear fuel
- material used to produce power inside a nuclear plant
- profit
- the money a company earns after paying its costs
Level 2 — Elementary
Nvidia, the world's biggest maker of AI computer chips, is reportedly discussing a huge financing deal with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
Under the plan, Nvidia would guarantee about $250 billion so that OpenAI can lease a massive 10-gigawatt data center campus being built in southern Ohio, about 50 miles from Columbus.
The campus is being built by SB Energy, a power company owned by SoftBank, on land that used to hold a uranium enrichment facility. The full project, including computer chips, could cost more than $500 billion.
Because OpenAI has not yet turned a profit, it cannot easily get a strong credit rating on its own, which is why Nvidia's financial backing is seen as necessary. The deal also raises fresh worries about 'circular financing,' where Nvidia helps fund the very customers who then buy its chips.
- financing
- the process of providing money for a project
- campus
- a large area containing several connected buildings
- gigawatt
- a huge unit of electrical power equal to one billion watts
- uranium enrichment
- a process that prepares uranium to be used as nuclear fuel
- credit rating
- a score showing how likely a company is to repay its debts
- backing
- financial or other support given to a project
- circular financing
- when a company funds its own customers, who then spend that money back on its products
- worries
- feelings of concern about possible problems
Level 3 — Intermediate
Nvidia is reportedly in talks to provide a roughly $250 billion financial guarantee that would enable OpenAI to lease a colossal 10-gigawatt data center campus that SB Energy, SoftBank's power subsidiary, is building on a decommissioned uranium enrichment site in southern Ohio.
The arrangement, one of the largest AI infrastructure commitments ever floated, would cover the lease and construction financing, while a separate negotiation reportedly worth up to $350 billion would help fund the chips themselves, pushing the full campus cost potentially past $500 billion.
Such extensive backing is considered necessary because OpenAI, which has yet to post a profit, cannot obtain an investment-grade credit rating independently, leaving Nvidia to effectively underwrite the risk that its own biggest customer might otherwise be unable to finance on its own terms.
The power supplying the site is controlled by the US government and partly funded by Japan under a recent trade agreement worth $33 billion, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick involved in allocating access, reviving scrutiny of so-called circular financing across the AI industry as chipmakers increasingly bankroll the very customers who buy their hardware.
- colossal
- extremely large in size or extent
- subsidiary
- a company controlled by a larger parent company
- decommissioned
- taken permanently out of active service
- infrastructure
- the basic physical systems needed for a project or economy to function
- investment-grade
- a credit rating indicating low risk of default
- underwrite
- to accept financial responsibility for the risk of a venture
- allocating
- distributing resources for a particular purpose
- bankroll
- to provide the funds needed for a project or venture
Level 4 — Advanced
Nvidia is reportedly weighing a roughly $250 billion financial guarantee that would allow OpenAI to lease a colossal 10-gigawatt data center campus that SB Energy, SoftBank's power subsidiary, is erecting on a decommissioned uranium enrichment site in southern Ohio, in what would rank among the largest AI infrastructure commitments ever assembled.
The arrangement would cover lease and construction financing alone, while a parallel negotiation said to be worth up to $350 billion would separately fund the chips themselves, potentially pushing the full campus's cost past half a trillion dollars and cementing its status as the most expensive data center project yet conceived.
Such extraordinary backing is deemed necessary precisely because OpenAI, still unprofitable, cannot secure an investment-grade credit rating on its own merits, effectively compelling Nvidia to underwrite the counterparty risk of its own largest customer, an arrangement whose terms remain unsettled and could still unravel.
With power for the site controlled by the federal government and partly financed through a $33 billion Japanese commitment under a recent trade accord, and with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick involved in adjudicating access, the deal has reignited scrutiny of a circular financing pattern in which chipmakers increasingly bankroll the very customers whose purchases sustain their own valuations.
