A new study published in the journal JAMA Network Open used machine learning to examine overnight sleep EEG recordings, which measure the brain's electrical activity, from about 7,000 adults enrolled across five different research studies.
The researchers, led by teams at UC San Francisco and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, developed a 'brain age index' that measures the gap between a person's brain age, based on their sleep EEG patterns, and their actual chronological age.
Participants were between 40 and 94 years old and had no signs of dementia at the start of the study, and researchers followed them for between 3.5 and 17 years, during which about 1,000 people went on to develop the condition.
The study found that every additional 10 years of 'brain age' beyond a person's real age raised their future dementia risk by nearly 40 percent, suggesting sleep EEG recordings could help identify people at higher risk long before memory symptoms appear.
