Stanford Scientists Find a Way to Regrow Worn Knee Cartilage and Halt Arthritis

A Stanford Medicine team has identified an aging enzyme called 15-PGDH that accumulates in joints over time and prevents knee cartilage from repairing itself, and found that blocking it regenerated worn cartilage in old mice and prevented arthritis after joint injuries in young mice. The treatment also stimulated new cartilage growth in human tissue samples taken from knee replacement surgeries, suggesting the body's repair machinery remains available even in aged joints. The study, published in the journal Science, raises the possibility of an injection or oral medication that could one day significantly reduce the need for knee and hip replacement surgery.
