Astronomers have discovered a supermassive black hole located about 30,000 light-years from the center of its home galaxy, the farthest such black hole ever spotted away from a galactic core.
The galaxy, called WISEA J014656.04-152214.7, sits about 750 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Cetus. Supermassive black holes usually sit at the very center of a galaxy, not out near its edge.
This black hole stayed completely hidden and invisible until it tore apart a passing star late last year, producing a bright flash of light called a tidal disruption event.
An artificial intelligence powered sky survey automatically recognized the flash as unusual, leading astronomers to the black hole. Researchers estimate its mass at roughly one million times the mass of the Sun, and the findings were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
