Scientists used a special telescope in space called the James Webb Space Telescope. It looked very closely at a huge black hole.
The black hole is in the middle of a galaxy called NGC 4696. A galaxy is a giant group of stars, gas, and dust.
The telescope saw gas moving in a big circle around the black hole. This spinning gas feeds the black hole and helps it grow.
Scientists say this helps explain how giant black holes keep getting the fuel they need, almost like a giant space engine that never runs out of gas.

Level 2 — Elementary
Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have taken the clearest pictures yet of gas flowing into a supermassive black hole at the center of a distant galaxy called NGC 4696.
NGC 4696 sits at the heart of the Centaurus Cluster, a crowded group of galaxies located about one hundred forty five million light years from Earth.
The telescope revealed a spinning disk of gas about eight hundred light years wide, connected to a long stream of material falling toward the black hole. Some of the gas moves as fast as six hundred kilometers per second.
Scientists think the black hole heats nearby gas with powerful jets, the gas then cools and falls back in as filaments, and the cycle repeats. This process may explain how supermassive black holes keep feeding themselves over billions of years.

Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have obtained the most detailed images yet of gas accreting onto the supermassive black hole at the center of NGC 4696, the dominant galaxy of the Centaurus Cluster, located roughly one hundred forty five million light years from Earth.
Led by astrophysicist Julie Hlavacek-Larrondo of the University of Montreal, an international team spent nearly eight hours observing the galaxy with Webb's Near Infrared Spectrograph, mapping warm ionized gas at a resolution fine enough to distinguish features just thirty light years across.
The observations revealed a rotating disk of gas roughly eight hundred light years in diameter, connected to a long infalling filament carrying material toward the black hole, with portions of the gas moving at velocities up to six hundred kilometers per second.
The findings support a self regulated feedback loop in which relativistic jets from the black hole heat surrounding gas, which subsequently cools and condenses into magnetically guided filaments that fall back toward the disk, replenishing the black hole's fuel supply and helping resolve a long standing question about how such objects sustain themselves.
