The mice came from four genetically different strains, but were all kept under the exact same conditions. Even so, their liver tumors developed in very different ways depending on their genetic background.
Interestingly, almost every mouse, no matter its genetic strain, developed tumors that activated the same cancer-driving system inside cells, called the MAPK pathway. Scientists say this discovery could help doctors better predict who is at risk of cancer.
