A quantum computer is a very special kind of computer. Scientists at a lab called HRL just built a new quantum computer chip.
The chip has 18 tiny parts called qubits. Qubits help the computer solve very hard problems.
The chip works inside a super cold box, colder than outer space. It can find and fix its own mistakes all by itself.
This is important because most quantum chips need long wires to a warm room to work. This new chip needs far fewer wires, which could help build bigger quantum computers.

Level 2 — Elementary
Researchers at HRL Laboratories have built a silicon chip containing 18 qubits, the basic building blocks of a quantum computer, that can check and correct its own errors while running almost entirely on its own.
The chip operates inside a chamber cooled to about 4 Kelvin, only a few degrees above absolute zero, using a special control chip built to work at that extreme cold rather than at room temperature.
Normally, quantum chips need bundles of wires running from the freezing chamber out to warm equipment that controls them, which makes it hard to add more qubits without an impossible tangle of wiring.
By moving the control electronics into the cold chamber itself, HRL's design removes much of that wiring problem, offering engineers a possible blueprint for building much larger quantum computers in the future.
