Giant salamanders are large animals that live in water. Japan has some of the biggest giant salamanders in the world today.
More than twenty years ago, someone found three small fossil bones in Japan. For a long time, no one knew exactly what animal they came from.
Now scientists at Kyoto University studied the bones carefully. They found that the bones belong to a brand new type of giant salamander that no one knew about before.
This ancient salamander lived in lakes about 3.5 million years ago. Scientists gave it a new name: Limnospondylus ajimuensis.

Three fossil vertebrae discovered in Japan more than two decades ago have finally been identified as belonging to an entirely new genus and species of giant salamander, researchers at Kyoto University announced.
The salamander lived in ancient lakes roughly 3.5 million years ago and has been named Limnospondylus ajimuensis, combining Greek words meaning "lake" and "vertebra" with a reference to Ajimu, the area where the fossils were found.
Dr. Masahiro Noda and colleagues determined that as an adult, the salamander may have reached approximately 1.1 meters in length, making it a substantial predator in its ancient lake habitat.
The discovery fills a significant gap in the fossil record of giant salamanders, one of the world's oldest surviving amphibian lineages, and suggests that more unrecognized species may be sitting misclassified in museum collections around the world.
