A new study has found something surprising about Saturn's magnetic shield, also called its magnetosphere: it is tilted toward the afternoon side of the planet instead of staying near noon, as happens on Earth.
The magnetosphere has an opening called a cusp, where particles from space can slip down toward the planet's atmosphere. Scientists used data collected by NASA's Cassini spacecraft between 2004 and 2010 to study this cusp.
By examining data from two instruments on Cassini, researchers identified 67 examples of this cusp opening, far more than the roughly 11 found in earlier studies, allowing them to map its position much more clearly.
The team concluded that Saturn's fast spin, a Saturn day lasts only about 10.7 hours, combines with charged particles released by its icy moon Enceladus to push the cusp toward the afternoon side of the planet.
