Level 2 — Elementary
Researchers at Kyoto University in Japan have used orbital data from about 1,200 Starlink satellites to build the first detailed map of Earth's thermosphere, a thin layer of atmosphere located roughly 300 miles above the surface.
The thermosphere is difficult to study directly because it contains very little gas, but every satellite passing through it experiences tiny amounts of drag that slowly slow it down.
The team treated the entire Starlink network as a giant array of sensors, tracking how each satellite's orbit changed slightly over time to figure out the density of gas around it.
This method, called tomography, is the same basic idea doctors use to create detailed images inside the human body, and the resulting atmospheric map was published in the journal Earth, Planets and Space.

More than 99 percent of the material in this region consists of electrically neutral gas, with the electrically charged particles that make up the ionosphere accounting for less than 1 percent, which makes direct measurement of thermospheric density notoriously difficult using conventional instruments.
The researchers' insight was to treat each Starlink satellite as a moving sensor: as a satellite travels through even the extremely thin gas of the thermosphere, atmospheric drag causes a small, measurable loss of orbital energy, and by tracking thousands of these tiny changes across the constellation, the team applied tomography, a technique borrowed from medical imaging, to reconstruct density patterns at roughly 482 kilometers altitude.
The resulting map, published in the journal Earth, Planets and Space, represents a significant advance for space situational awareness, since accurate thermospheric density data directly improves predictions of how satellites will drift over time, a growing concern as low Earth orbit becomes increasingly crowded with active spacecraft and debris.
