Einstein Probe Catches Intermediate-Mass Black Hole Devouring a White Dwarf Star

A Chinese space telescope called Einstein Probe detected a powerful X-ray burst on July 2, 2025, that scientists say is the strongest evidence yet of an intermediate-mass black hole tearing apart a white dwarf star. The event, named EP250702a, unleashed energy equivalent to about 3 times 10 to the power of 49 ergs per second and may help fill the long-standing gap in the black hole census. The findings were published as a cover article in Science Bulletin.
