Researchers examined 91 iron weapons and pieces of jewelry, testing each for traces of nickel, an element that is common in meteorites but scarce in terrestrial iron ore. Roughly a dozen signet rings tested positive, with nine samples considered very likely of meteoritic origin and several others requiring further examination.
The findings, published in the Journal of Archaeological Science, suggest that iron from the sky held a distinct symbolic status among Aegean elites long before the technology existed to extract iron from ordinary rock through smelting. Because meteoritic iron arrives already in a usable metallic form, it could be worked directly, without the specialized furnaces later iron production required.
Researchers propose that rings made from this rare material likely functioned as power symbols among prominent members of the Minoan and Mycenaean palatial elite, a material chosen precisely because of its extraterrestrial origin rather than despite it.
