Long ago, people lived in a cave in Armenia. The cave is called Ararat-1. It is near Mount Ararat, in the Caucasus Mountains. People lived there between 33,000 and 52,000 years ago.
Scientists studied stone tools from the cave. They found 1,770 stone tools. The tools came from five layers in the cave floor. The study appeared in a science journal called Quaternary Science Reviews.
The people used two kinds of stone. One kind is obsidian, a sharp black glass from volcanoes. The other kind is chert, a different type of stone. They used obsidian and chert in different ways.
People carried obsidian tools with them and fixed them many times. Some obsidian came from 200 kilometers away. But people found chert near the cave and used it fast, then threw it away. The cave was a rest stop on a long journey.
